Apart from the present departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery of the Al Shifa Hospital, where provision for the care of patients having neurological disorders is made and cranial and spinal surgeries are done for head injuries and spinal trauma, respectively, under the able team leadership and guidance of the attending Neurologist and Neurosurgeon, with the back up of skilled and experienced nurses and paramedical staff, it was recently contemplated to commence the Al Shifa Brain & Spine Clinic, separately, in order to lessen the throng in the above two departments, facilitating a better care and treatment to these patients, at first hand. By Brain & Spine Clinic is meant the clinic, where the Neurosurgeon work in conjunction with other medical specialists, like neurologists, neuroradiologists, electrophysicologists, radiation oncologists, orthopedic surgeons, rehabilitation physicians and the like. This ‘team approach’ assures the delivery of ‘state-of-the-art’ care, and best treatment options, while allowing the Neurosurgeon to focus on the neurological problem of the patient. Neurosurgery is the practice of medicine, dealing with diseases of the nervous system, including the spine and the spinal cord. The surgical treatment of these diseases calls for the skill and expertise of a surgeon, who is specially trained -hence the term Neurosurgeon. A Neurosurgeon is not just a ‘brain surgeon’, but treats patients with many other different ailments, which would include back or leg pain; neck or arm pain; strokes; lesions of the brain, spine or spinal cord; trauma to the brain, spine or spinal cord; abnormalities of blood vessels within the brain, spine or spinal cord, and that of nerves throughout the body. It is hoped that our patients would utilize the facilities of this Clinic to the fullest, for a better treatment and personalized care, in order to get cured of their ailments, and thereby improve the quality of their lives.
